Vehicle Data Recording and Privacy

Event Data Recorders

The vehicle is equipped with a number of complex systems that monitor and control certain vehicle functions. Some information is recorded during normal vehicle operation and helps in diagnosing and repairing malfunctions.

Other data is recorded only during collisions or in similar conditions.

For this purpose, the vehicle is equipped with event data recorders.

The vehicle may record information about vehicle status and driver operation, such as engine speed, brake pedal application, and seat belt use. Special equipment connected to the vehicle in a specific way is used to read this data. The data is read during vehicle maintenance at a service facility. Some data is transmitted electronically to the GM Global Diagnostic System. The manufacturer does not have access to crash information and does not release this data to anyone except in the following cases:

• with the consent of the owner or, for a leased vehicle, the lessee,

• upon receipt of an official request from the police or other government agencies,

• to protect the manufacturer in the event of legal action,

• in other cases provided for by law

In addition, the manufacturer may use the collected or received information

• for research purposes,

• for publication for research purposes (provided that confidentiality requirements are met),

• for sharing data not linked to a specific vehicle with other organizations for research purposes.
