Repair

Warning
Before starting any service procedure in this section, refer to the Safety Warnings in section 100-00 General Information. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

NOTE
Antenna and heated window grid lines are not embedded in the glass but baked onto the glass surface and can therefore be scraped off. An intact grid line has small raised ridges that protrude above the glass surface and are easily felt when drawn over with a fingernail. Antenna and heated window grid lines that have been cut with a razor blade will be smooth when a fingernail is drawn over the affected area. Non-functioning heated window grid lines may appear intact to the eye due to residue left on the glass and require diagnosis with a voltmeter or 12 V test lamp.

Bring the vehicle to room temperature of at least 16 °C or higher.

NOTICE: Do not use scrapers, sharp tools, or abrasive glass cleaners on the inside surface of the rear window glass, as this may damage the antenna and heated window grid lines.
Clean the entire antenna and heated window grid line repair area with a glass cleaner and 0000 steel wool to remove all dirt, wax, grease, oil, or other foreign materials.

Mark the location of the antenna or heated window grid break on the outside of the rear window glass.

Using thin polypropylene film tape, mask the area directly above and below the antenna or heated window grid break. Extend the tape 26 mm (1.0236 in) beyond the area of concern in both directions. The break area must be centered in the mask. Fine Line Tape polypropylene film (commercially available).

NOTE
If the brown layer is not damaged or is missing, apply only the silver grid repair compound across the break. If both the brown and silver layers of the antenna or heated window grid are broken or missing, apply a layer of lacquer touch-up paint across the grid line break before applying the rear window heater repair compound. Do not overlap the silver grid line with paint. Several applications may be necessary to achieve color match.
Allow at least 5 minutes of drying time between applications of touch-up paint or silver repair coating. Applying fewer coats or insufficient drying time between coats produces a repaired resistance that is greater than the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) resistance, resulting in poor defrost performance and excessive localized heating.
Apply the repair coating to the antenna or heated window grid line break area with several smooth, continuous strokes. Extend the silver repair coating at least 6.35 mm (0.25 in) on both sides of the break area. Apply at least 6 coats of the grid repair compound. Fine Line Tape polypropylene film (commercially available)

NOTE
The repair coating air dries in approximately one minute and can be under tension after 5 minutes. Optimum adhesion occurs in approximately 24 hours.
Allow the repair area to dry completely, then remove the masking.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the antenna or heated window grid line with the razor blade. Additional repair may be necessary if this occurs.
Remove excess repair compound above or below the antenna or heated window grid line using a razor blade.

NOTE
The inside surface of the antenna or heated grid line is not painted, but due to silver tarnishing, the grid tends to change to a golden or brown color. The repair area will be bright silver and will also tarnish over time to match the rest of the antenna or heated window grid.
Check the system for normal operation.
