GMC Terrain: Airbag System / Airbag System

The vehicle has the following airbags:

Driver Frontal Airbag
Front Passenger Frontal Airbag
Driver Seat-Mounted Side Impact Airbag
Front Passenger Seat-Mounted Side Impact Airbag
Driver and Second Row Outboard Passenger Roof-Rail Airbags
Front Outboard Passenger and Second Row Outboard Passenger Roof-Rail Airbags

All airbags have the word AIRBAG on the trim or on a label near the deployment opening.

For frontal airbags, the word AIRBAG is located in the center of the steering wheel for the driver and on the instrument panel for the front outboard passenger.

For seat-mounted side impact airbags, the word AIRBAG is located on the side of the seat nearest the door.

For roof-rail airbags, the word AIRBAG is located on the headliner or trim.

Airbags are designed to supplement the protection provided by seat belts. Although today's airbags are also designed to reduce the risk of injury from the force of the inflating airbag, all airbags must inflate very quickly to do their job.

Here are the most important things to know about the airbag system:

Warning

You can be seriously injured or killed in a crash if you do not wear your seat belt, even with airbags. Airbags are designed to work with seat belts, not replace them. Also, airbags are not designed to deploy in every crash. In some crashes, seat belts are the only restraint. See When Should an Airbag Deploy?

Wearing your seat belt during a crash helps reduce your chances of being struck by objects inside the vehicle or being ejected from it. Airbags are a "supplemental restraint" to seat belts. Everyone in the vehicle must wear their seat belt properly, whether or not there is an airbag for that person.

Air bags inflate with great force and faster than the blink of an eye. Anyone who is leaning against or very close to an air bag when it inflates can be seriously injured or killed. Do not sit closer than necessary to any air bag, such as sitting on the edge of the seat or leaning forward. Seat belts help hold you in position before and during a crash. Always wear your seat belt, even with air bags. The driver should sit as far back as possible while still maintaining control of the vehicle. Seat belts and the front passenger air bag are most effective when you sit upright and keep both feet on the floor.

Passengers must not lean against or sleep near the door or side window in seating positions with side air bags in the seats and/or roof rail air bags.

Children who are leaning against, or very close to, any air bag when it inflates can be seriously injured or killed. Always secure children properly in the vehicle. For more information, see Older Children or Infants and Small Children.

The air bag readiness light in the instrument cluster shows the air bag symbol.
