Seat Belt Precautions

~2min read

Always wear your seat belt and make sure all passengers wear their seat belts before starting any trip. Airbags are designed to supplement seat belts as an additional safety device, but they are not a substitute. Most states require all vehicle passengers to wear seat belts.

WARNING

ALL occupants must use seat belts while the vehicle is moving. Observe the following precautions when adjusting and fastening seat belts:

  • ALWAYS properly secure children under 13 years old in the rear seats.
  • NEVER allow children to ride in the front passenger seat. If a child 13 years or older must sit in the front seat, move the seat as far back as possible and properly secure them in the seat.
  • NEVER allow an infant or child to be held on a passenger's lap.
  • NEVER drive with the seatback reclined while the vehicle is moving.
  • Do not allow children to sit in a position where the shoulder belt or lap belt does not fit properly.
  • Do not wear the shoulder belt under the arm or behind the back.
  • Always wear both the shoulder and lap portions of the belt.
  • Do not use a seat belt that is twisted. A twisted seat belt will not properly protect you in the event of an accident.
  • Do not use a seat belt if the webbing or hardware is damaged.
  • Do not fasten the seat belt buckle to the buckles of other seats.
  • NEVER unfasten the seat belt while driving. This may cause loss of vehicle control, resulting in an accident.
  • Make sure the buckle latch mechanism is not obstructed by the seat belt. This may prevent the seat belt from being securely fastened.
  • No modifications or additions should be made by the user that could interfere with seat belt operation or remove slack, or prevent the seat belt assembly from being adjusted to remove looseness.

WARNING

Damaged seat belts and seat belt assemblies will not function properly. Always replace:

  • Worn, contaminated, or damaged webbing
  • Damaged hardware
  • The entire seat belt assembly after it has been involved in an accident, even if damage to the webbing or assembly is not obvious
