Seat Belt Pretensioner (Driver and Front Passenger)

~2min read
Hyundai Palisade. (Driver and front passenger)

Your vehicle is equipped with driver and front passenger seat belt pretensioners (with pretensioners).

The purpose of the pretensioners is to ensure that the seat belts fit snugly against the occupant's body in certain frontal or side collisions.

When the vehicle stops suddenly or if the passenger attempts to lean forward too quickly, the seat belt retractor locks in position. In certain frontal or side collisions, the pretensioner activates and retracts the seat belt to hold the occupant's body firmly.

(1) Retractor Pretensioner

The purpose of the retractor pretensioner is to ensure that the shoulder belts fit snugly against the upper body of the occupant in certain frontal or side collisions.

If the system detects excessive tension on the driver or passenger seat belt when the pretensioner activates, the load limiter inside the retractor pretensioner will release part of the pressure on the belt.

WARNING

  • Always wear your seat belt and sit properly in your seat.
  • Do not use a seat belt that is loose or twisted. A loose or twisted seat belt will not protect you properly in an accident.
  • Do not place anything near the buckle. This may adversely affect the buckle and cause it to malfunction.
  • Always replace the pretensioners after activation or an accident.
  • NEVER inspect, service, repair, or replace the pretensioners yourself. This must be done by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
  • Do not strike the seat belt assemblies.

WARNING

Do not touch the seat belt pretensioner components for several minutes after they have been activated. When the seat belt pretensioner activates in a collision, the pretensioners become hot and may burn you.

The seat belt pretensioner system consists mainly of the following components. Their locations are shown in the illustration above:

1. SRS Airbag Warning Light

2. Retractor Pretensioner

3. SRS Control Module

NOTICE

The sensor that activates the SRS airbag is linked to the seat belt pretensioners. The SRS warning light on the instrument panel will illuminate for approximately 6 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, and then it should turn off.

If the pretensioner is not operating properly, the warning light will illuminate even if the SRS airbag system has no malfunction. If the warning light does not come on, stays on, or flashes while the vehicle is in motion, have the seat belt pretensioners and SRS airbags inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

NOTICE

  • Both the driver and front passenger seat belt pretensioners may be activated in certain frontal or side collisions or rollovers.
  • When the seat belt pretensioners are activated, a loud noise may be heard and fine dust, which may appear as smoke, may be visible in the passenger compartment. This is normal and not dangerous.
  • Although it is non-toxic, the fine dust may cause skin irritation and should not be inhaled for long periods. Wash all exposed skin thoroughly after an accident in which the seat belt pretensioners have been activated.
