Before Driving
Before Entering the Vehicle
- Make sure all windows, outside mirrors, and exterior lights are clean and unobstructed.
- Remove any frost, snow, or ice.
- Visually inspect the tires for uneven wear and damage.
- Check under the vehicle for any signs of leaks.
- Make sure there are no obstacles behind you if you intend to back up.
Before Starting
- Make sure the hood and all doors are securely closed and locked. Although it is not absolutely necessary for transporting cargo, etc., close the tailgate before driving your vehicle.
- If you are driving with the tailgate down, be especially careful when reversing uphill.
- Adjust the seat position and steering wheel.
- Adjust the inside and side mirrors.
- Make sure all lights work.
- Fasten your seat belt. Make sure all passengers have fastened their seat belts.
- Check the gauges and indicators on the instrument panel and the messages on the instrument cluster display when the ignition key is in the ON position.
- Make sure all items you are carrying are properly stored or securely fastened.
WARNING
To reduce the risk of SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH, observe the following precautions:
- ALWAYS wear your seat belt. All passengers must be properly restrained whenever the vehicle is in motion. For more information, refer to "Seat Belts" in chapter 3.
- Always drive defensively. Assume other drivers or pedestrians may be inattentive or make mistakes.
- Concentrate on the driving task. Driver distraction can lead to accidents.
- Leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead.
WARNING
NEVER drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is dangerous and may result in an accident and SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH.
Driving under the influence is the number one cause of highway deaths every year. Even a small amount of alcohol will affect your reflexes, perception, and judgment. Just one drink can reduce your ability to respond to changing conditions and emergencies, and your reaction time worsens with each additional drink. Driving under the influence of drugs is just as dangerous, or more dangerous, than driving under the influence of alcohol.
You are much more likely to have a serious accident if you drink or use drugs and drive. If you are drinking or using drugs, do not drive. Do not ride with a driver who has been drinking or using drugs. Choose a designated driver or call a taxi.
