Important Safety Notice

Proper service methods and repair procedures are essential for the safe, reliable operation of all motor vehicles, as well as for the safety of the person doing the work. The service procedures and descriptions in this manual contain general recommendations for service and repair. Procedures, techniques, tools and parts for service vary, as do the skills of the technician. It is not possible to advise or warn of every possible case in this manual. Therefore, anyone who intends to use a replacement part, service procedure or tool not recommended by the vehicle manufacturer must first make sure that the replacement part, procedure or tool selected does not put the safety of personnel or the safe operation of the vehicle at risk. The following list contains general WARNINGS that you must observe when working on the vehicle.
  • Always wear safety glasses with side shields to protect your eyes.
  • Use safety stands when a procedure requires you to be under the vehicle.
  • Make sure the ignition key is still in the OFF position, unless otherwise specified in the procedure.
  • Apply the parking brake when working on the vehicle. If you have an automatic transmission, place the shift lever in P (Park) unless otherwise specified for the specific procedure.
  • Place wheel chocks in front of and behind the tires to prevent the vehicle from moving.
  • Start the engine only in a well-ventilated area to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Keep away from moving parts (keep clothing clear of these parts), in particular the drive belts, while the engine is running.
  • To avoid severe burns, avoid contact with hot metal parts such as the radiator, exhaust manifold, exhaust pipe, catalytic converter and muffler.
  • Do not smoke while working on the vehicle.
  • To avoid injury, always remove rings, watches, dangling jewelry, and loose clothing before you start working on the vehicle.
  • When working under the hood, keep your hands and other objects away from the radiator cooling fan blades! Your vehicle may be equipped with a cooling fan that can be activated even when the ignition switch is in the OFF position. For this reason, make sure that the radiator fan motor is fully disconnected when working under the hood and the engine is not rotating.
