Emission Control System

Description and Operation

~1min read

Description

The emission control system consists of three main systems.
  • The crankcase emission control system prevents crankcase gases from being released into the atmosphere. This system recirculates the gas back to the intake manifold (closed crankcase ventilation).
  • The evaporative emission control system prevents fuel vapor from being released into the atmosphere. This system burns the gas in the engine after collecting it in the canister.
  • The exhaust emission control system converts the three pollutants [hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxides (NOx)] into harmless substances using a 3-way catalytic converter.
