Emission Control System

Description and Operation

~1min read

Description

The emission control system consists of three main systems.
  • The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system prevents crankcase emissions from being released into the atmosphere. This system recirculates the gas back into the intake manifold (closed-type crankcase ventilation).
  • The Evaporative Emission Control System prevents fuel vapors from being released into the atmosphere. This system collects the vapors in the canister and then burns them when the engine is in the appropriate operating condition.
  • The exhaust emission control system converts the three pollutants [hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx)] into harmless substances using the three-way catalytic converter.
