What to Do in an Emergency

If the Engine Does Not Start

~1min read

If the engine does not crank or cranks slowly

1. If your vehicle has an automatic transmission, make sure the shift lever is in N (Neutral) or P (Park) and the parking brake is applied.

2. Check the battery terminals to make sure they are clean and tight.

3. Turn on the interior light. If the light dims or goes out while cranking the starter, the battery is discharged.

4. Check the starter connections to make sure they are securely tightened.

5. Do not push or tow the vehicle to start it. Refer to the "Jump Starting" instructions.

WARNING - Push or Towing Start

Do not push or tow the vehicle to start it. Push or tow starting may overload and damage the catalytic converter and create a fire hazard.

If the engine cranks normally but does not start

1. Check the fuel level.

2. With the ignition key in the LOCK position, check all connectors on the ignition coils and spark plugs. Reconnect anything that is disconnected or loose.

3. Inspect the fuel lines in the engine compartment.

4. If the engine still does not start, call an authorized Kia dealer or seek other qualified assistance.
