Event Data Recorder

~2min read

This vehicle is equipped with an event data recorder (EDR). The main purpose of an EDR is to record data during collisions or similar situations, such as airbag deployment or a collision with an obstacle on the road. The data helps to understand how the vehicle's systems performed. The EDR is designed to record vehicle dynamics and safety system data for a short period, generally a maximum of 30 seconds. The EDR in this vehicle is designed to record the following data:

  • How the various systems in your vehicle operated;
  • Whether or not the driver and passenger safety belts were buckled/fastened;
  • How far (if applicable) the driver depressed the accelerator/brake pedal; and,
  • How fast the vehicle was traveling

This data can help better understand the circumstances in which collisions and injuries occur.

NOTE:

Your vehicle only records EDR data in the event of a collision or similar major accident. The EDR does not record any data under normal driving conditions, and no personal information (for example, name, gender, age and location of the collision) is recorded. However, other parties, such as law enforcement, may combine EDR data with the type of personally identifying data that is usually obtained during a collision investigation.

Special equipment is required to read data recorded by an EDR, and access to the vehicle or the EDR is needed. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer, other parties, such as law enforcement, that have the special equipment can read the information if they have access to the vehicle or the EDR.

Mazda will not disclose any data recorded by an EDR to a third party, except:

  • If written consent is obtained from the vehicle owner or lessee
  • If the police or other law enforcement authorities officially request it
  • If it is used to defend Mazda in a legal proceeding, claim or arbitration
  • If a judge or court orders it

However, when necessary, Mazda will:

  • Use the data to conduct research on Mazda vehicle performance, including safety.
  • Disclose the data, or a summary of the data, to a third party for research purposes, without disclosing vehicle or owner identification information.
