Important safety notes
Battery removal and installation require special tools and specialist knowledge. Therefore, always have battery work carried out by a qualified workshop.
WARNINGImproper work on the battery can, for example, cause a short circuit and damage the vehicle electronics. This may impair the function of active safety systems such as ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) or ESP® (Electronic Stability Program).
- If the ABS is faulty, the wheels may lock during braking. The vehicle's braking control is then limited and the braking distance may increase. There is a risk of an accident.
- If ESP® is faulty, it cannot stabilize the vehicle's path when the vehicle tends to skid or a wheel spins. There is a risk of an accident.
Therefore, always have battery work carried out by a qualified workshop.
WARNINGWhen handling the battery, observe the safety instructions and take the necessary protective measures.
Explosion hazard
It is prohibited
to smoke or bring a fire or naked flame near the battery during handling.
Avoid creating
sparks.
The electrolyte is corrosive. Avoid any contact with skin, eyes or clothing.
Wear appropriate protective clothing, in particular gloves, an apron and face protection.
Immediately rinse any electrolyte splashes with clean water. If necessary, consult a doctor.
Wear
eye protection.
Keep
children away.
Observe the
operating instructions.
For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz recommends using only batteries tested and approved by Mercedes-Benz for your vehicle. These batteries offer better sealing so that occupants are not burned by acid should they be damaged in an accident.
To avoid being burned by fire or acid, you must observe the following safety instructions when handling a battery:
- Do not lean over the battery.
- Do not place metal objects on the battery. Otherwise, you could cause a short circuit and the gas mixture released by the battery could explode.
- Make sure you do not build up static electricity. For example, avoid wearing synthetic clothing or causing friction with textile materials. For the same reason, do not move a battery by pulling or pushing it across carpet or any other synthetic surface.
- Never touch the battery first. To discharge any static electricity that may be present, first stand outside the vehicle and touch the bodywork.
- Do not rub the battery with cloths. Static electricity build-up or even a spark could cause it to explode.
Batteries contain
pollutants. The law prohibits disposing of them with household waste.
They must be collected separately and recycled in accordance with environmental protection regulations.
Dispose of
batteries in accordance with environmental protection regulations. Take used batteries to a qualified workshop or a used battery collection point.
Observe the maintenance intervals in the service booklet or contact a qualified workshop for further information.
Always have battery work carried out by a qualified workshop. If you must exceptionally disconnect the battery yourself, observe the following points:- Switch off the engine and remove the key. On vehicles equipped with KEYLESS-GO, make sure the ignition is not switched on. Make sure all warning lamps in the instrument cluster are off. Otherwise, you risk damaging electronic components such as the alternator.
- Disconnect the negative terminal clamp first, then the positive terminal clamp. Never mix up the clamps.
Otherwise, the vehicle electronics could be damaged.
- Make sure the transmission remains locked in position P when the battery is disconnected (vehicles with automatic transmission). The vehicle is immobilised and can no longer be moved.
The battery and the positive terminal clamp cover must always be correctly installed during operation.
The vehicle battery must always be sufficiently charged so that it achieves its expected service life.
Like other batteries, the vehicle battery can discharge over time when the vehicle is not in use. In this case, have the battery disconnected by a qualified workshop. You can also connect it to a charger recommended by Mercedes-Benz to maintain its charge level. For more information, contact a qualified workshop.
If the vehicle is mainly used for short trips or is parked for long periods, have the battery's state of charge checked more frequently. If you intend to park the vehicle for an extended period, ask a qualified workshop for advice.
Remove the key when you park the vehicle and do not need any electrical consumers. The vehicle then draws only a very small amount of energy, which spares the battery. After a power interruption (e.g. due to battery discharge), carry out the following steps:- Setting the clock (see the separate operator's manual for the audio system or COMAND Online)
- Resetting the automatic folding and unfolding function of the exterior mirrors by a single unfolding operation
