The 12-volt battery in the Citroën C6 is located in the luggage compartment, well protected under the left trim panel. This chapter describes how to locate, remove and replace the battery, with a step-by-step procedure and illustrations. Precautions when disconnecting are particularly important to avoid damage to the windows. After reconnection, several systems must be re-initialised, such as the window lifters, radio presets and NaviDrive. Starting with an auxiliary battery is also explained in detail, including safety notes on correct polarity and avoiding sparks. This chapter provides all relevant information on maintenance and the safe handling of the vehicle battery, ideal for emergencies or regular service.

Battery location and access

BATTERY REPLACEMENT (Contact a CITROËN dealer or a qualified workshop.)

  1. Release the two pins on each side of the luggage compartment floor and remove the floor.
  2. On each side trim panel, release the two fixing pins A.
  3. Remove the two screws B on each side and remove the sill trim.
  4. On the side trim panel on the battery side, release pin D.
  5. Remove the side trim panel on the battery side by pulling firmly, to expose the other fixing points.
  6. Release the luggage compartment light C.
  7. Disconnect the two battery terminals.
  8. Release the battery from its holder.
  9. Remove the battery.

Before replacing the battery or working on it, open the four windows slightly.

If the vehicle is unlocked with the key due to a battery fault, a window may be severely damaged or even break when a door with a closed window is opened or closed.

Starting the engine after disconnecting and reconnecting the battery

  1. Turn the ignition key.
  2. Wait about 1 minute before operating the starter, so that the electronic systems can re-initialise.

After the battery has been disconnected for a longer period, the following functions may need to be re-initialised:

  • Window lifter anti-pinch function.
  • Sunroof anti-pinch function.
  • Multifunction display settings (date, time, language, units for distance and temperature).
  • Radio presets.
  • NaviDrive. See the NaviDrive chapter.

Important

If the battery fails with the luggage compartment closed, it may be necessary to supply power to the vehicle. See next page.

Starting with an auxiliary battery

12-Volt-Batterie

If the battery is discharged, a separate auxiliary battery or the battery of another vehicle can be used.

When using the battery of another vehicle, switch off the engine of that vehicle. The two vehicles must not be in direct contact.

Check that the auxiliary battery voltage is correct (12 V).

Connect the cables in the order shown in the illustration.

A "+" terminal of the faulty vehicle (under the red cover).

B Auxiliary battery.

C "-" terminal of the faulty vehicle (in the engine compartment).

Make sure the clamps are tightened correctly (risk of sparks).

Start the vehicle providing the boost.

Run the engine at a slightly raised speed for about 1 minute.

Start the vehicle receiving the boost.

The specified sequence must be strictly observed.

Recommendation

Do not touch the clamps during the procedure.

Do not lean over the batteries.

Disconnect the cables in the reverse order of connection, and make sure they do not touch each other.

Do not create flames or sparks near the battery (explosive gas).

The battery contains corrosive dilute sulphuric acid.

Protect your eyes and face during all work.

If skin contact occurs, rinse immediately with plenty of clear water.

The 12-volt battery of the 1st generation Citroën C6 is easy to access, which makes routine maintenance and jump-starting simple. The 2005-2012 Citroën C6 provides clear instructions for safely connecting and replacing the battery to ensure long service life and reliable operation.

The notes on reinitialising important systems after disconnecting the battery are especially useful. Here the 1st generation Citroën C6 shows its well-considered design for maintenance and ease of use.

Safety when working with the battery is always the priority, another example of the high standards of quality and protection set by the 2005-2012 Citroën C6.
