Fluid levels

~2min read

Checking fluid levels on the Citroën C6 (1st generation, 2005–2012) is essential for safe and long-lasting vehicle use. This chapter explains step by step how to check and top up engine oil and coolant. Particular caution is required when the engine is hot, as system pressure can be dangerous. Simple illustrations and notes make maintenance easy to understand and practical. Please note: frequent topping up indicates a technical fault and should be checked by a specialist workshop. Strictly observing the fill marks and fluid qualities specified in the service booklet protects the engine and extends its service life.

Always check the fluid level and top up fluids with the engine cold.

Engine cold

Wait 15 minutes, or wait until the temperature has dropped below 100 °C. Then, protected with a cloth, slowly loosen the cap to let the pressure drop.

When working in the engine compartment with the engine warm, the cooling fan may also start.

The cooling fan can start at any time, even with the engine and ignition switched off.

Topping up coolant

The coolant level 1 must be between the MINI and MAXI marks on the expansion tank.

Top up the level. If you need to add more than 1 litre, have the cooling system checked by a CITROËN dealer or a qualified workshop.

Close the cap securely.

Note: If fluid needs to be topped up frequently, this indicates a fault that should be checked immediately.

Note: The cooling fan may keep running for up to 10 minutes after the engine is switched off.

Quality: See "Service booklet".
