ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS — OBD II
Your vehicle is equipped with a sophisticated on-board diagnostic system called OBD II. This system monitors the exhaust emission control, engine, and transmission systems. When these systems operate properly, your vehicle will provide excellent performance and fuel economy, and engine emissions will remain within applicable government regulations.
If any of these systems require service, the OBD II system will turn on the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL). It will also store diagnostic trouble codes and other information to help your service technician with repairs. Although your vehicle will normally be drivable and does not need to be towed, have it serviced by an authorized dealer as soon as possible.
- Continued driving with the MIL illuminated may cause further damage to the emission control system. It may also affect fuel economy and drivability. The vehicle should be serviced before any emissions testing is performed.
- If the MIL flashes while the vehicle is being driven, severe catalytic converter damage and loss of power will occur soon. Immediate service is required.
ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS (OBD II) CYBERSECURITY
Your vehicle has OBD II and a connection port to provide access to information related to the performance of your emission controls. Authorized service technicians may need access to this information to help with the diagnosis and service of your vehicle and its emission system.
- ONLY an authorized service technician should connect equipment to the OBD II connection port to read the VIN, diagnose, or service your vehicle.
- If unauthorized equipment is connected to the OBD II connection port, such as a driver behavior monitoring device, it may:
- Disrupt vehicle systems, including safety-related systems, or cause loss of vehicle control, which may result in a traffic accident with serious injury or death.
- Access or allow others to access information stored in your vehicle's systems, including personal information.
