Description and Operation — Front Suspension — Overview
Overview
The RWD front suspension consists of the following components:
- Lower Control Arms
- Lower Ball Joints
- Stabilizer bar, bushings and links
- Ride Height Sensors
- Strut and Spring Assemblies
- Wheel bearings and hubs
- Steering knuckles
- Wheel studs
The front suspension uses a MacPherson strut system. This suspension system includes a strut assembly that replaces the upper control arm and ball joint. The strut functions as a shock absorber and is surrounded by a coil spring. The strut and spring assembly supports the sprung mass of the vehicle and serves as the pivot point for the steering knuckle or spindle. This system uses front and rear lower control arms and a lower (unloaded) ball joint on the steering knuckle or spindle.
The vehicle is equipped with front coil spring suspension. This independent suspension uses a stabilizer bar to help vehicle stability. The wheel hub and wheel bearing are sealed units and are serviced as an assembly. The rear lower ball joints can be serviced independently of the rear lower control arms, but the front lower ball joint is integral to the front lower control arm and is serviced as part of that assembly.
