Immobilizer Operation

~1min read

This vehicle has a passive anti-theft system.

The system does not require manual arming or disarming.

The vehicle is automatically immobilized when the transmitter is removed from the vehicle.

The immobilizer system is disarmed when the ignition is turned to ON or ACC/ACCESSORY and a valid Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter is in the vehicle.

GMC Terrain. Immobilizer Operation

The security light in the instrument cluster illuminates if there is a problem with arming or disarming the anti-theft system.

One or more RKE transmitters are programmed to the immobilizer control module in your vehicle. Only a correctly programmed RKE transmitter will start the vehicle. If a transmitter is ever damaged, you may not be able to start your vehicle.

When attempting to start the vehicle, the security light may illuminate briefly when the ignition is turned on.

If the engine does not start and the security light stays on, there is a problem with the system. Turn the ignition off and try again.

If the ignition does not change from OFF to ON or ACC/ACCESSORY, and the RKE transmitter appears undamaged, try another transmitter. You may also try placing the transmitter in the cupholder in the center console.

If the ignition mode does not change with another transmitter or with the transmitter in the cupholder, your vehicle needs service. If the ignition changes modes, the first transmitter may be faulty. See your dealer, who can service the anti-theft system and have a new RKE transmitter programmed to the vehicle.

The immobilizer system can learn a new or replacement RKE transmitter. Up to eight transmitters can be programmed to the vehicle. To program additional transmitters, see "Programming Transmitters to the Vehicle" in the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) System Operation section.

Do not leave the transmitter or any device that disarms or deactivates the anti-theft system in the vehicle.
