Where to Install the Restraint

~2min read

Accident statistics show that children and infants are safest when properly secured in an appropriate child restraint installed in a rear seating position.

Whenever possible, children aged 12 years and younger should be secured in the rear seat.

Never place a rear-facing child restraint in front of an active passenger airbag. This is because the risk to a rear-facing child is very high if the airbag deploys.

When securing a child restraint with the seat belts in the rear seat, read the instructions provided with the child restraint to make sure it is compatible with this vehicle.

Child restraints and boosters vary significantly in size, and some may fit in certain seating positions better than others.

Depending on where you install the child restraint and its size, you may not be able to access adjacent seat belts or LATCH anchors for other passengers or child restraints. Adjacent seating positions must not be used if the child restraint blocks access to or interferes with seat belt routing.

Wherever a child restraint is installed, be sure to follow the instructions that come with the child restraint to secure and restrain the child properly.

Keep in mind that an unsecured child restraint can move during a collision or sudden stop and injure occupants of the vehicle. Be sure to properly secure any child restraint in the vehicle, even when no child is in it.
