What to Expect After Airbag Deployment

~1min read

After the front or side airbags deploy, they deflate very quickly. Inflation of the airbag will not prevent the driver from seeing through the windshield or from being able to steer. Curtain airbags may remain partially inflated for some time after they deploy.

WARNING

After airbag deployment, observe the following precautions:

  • Open the windows and doors as soon as possible after the collision to reduce prolonged exposure to smoke and powder released by the inflating airbag.
  • Do not touch the internal components of the airbag storage compartment immediately after airbag deployment. Parts in contact with the inflated airbag may be very hot.
  • Always thoroughly wash exposed skin areas with cold water and mild soap.
  • Always contact an authorized HYUNDAI dealer for immediate replacement of the airbag after deployment. Airbags are for single use only.

Noise and Smoke from Airbag Deployment

When the airbags deploy, they produce a loud noise and may release smoke and powder into the air inside the vehicle. This is normal and is the result of the airbag inflator igniting. After airbag deployment, you may experience significant discomfort in breathing due to contact of your chest with both the seat belt and the airbag, and from inhaling smoke and powder. The powder may aggravate asthma in some people. If you experience breathing difficulties after airbag deployment, seek medical attention immediately.

Although the smoke and powder are non-toxic, they may cause irritation to the skin, eyes, nose, throat, etc. If this occurs, immediately flush with cold water and seek medical attention if symptoms persist.
