Seats and Safety System

Children Always in the Rear

~2min read

WARNING

Always properly secure children in the rear seats of the vehicle. Children of all ages are safer when secured in the rear seat. A child riding in the front passenger seat can be seriously injured or killed by a strong impact from the deploying airbag.

Children under 13 years old should always ride in the rear seats and must always be properly restrained to minimize the risk of injury in an accident, sudden stop, or sharp maneuver. According to accident statistics, children are safer when properly secured in the rear seat than in the front seat. Even with airbags, children can be seriously injured or killed. Children who are too large for a child restraint must use the seat belts provided.

All 50 states have child restraint laws requiring children to travel in approved child restraints. Laws governing age or height/weight limits under which seat belts may be used instead of child restraints vary between states, so you should know the specific requirements in your state and where you are traveling.

Child restraint systems must be properly placed and installed in the rear seat. You must use a commercially available child restraint system that meets the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS 213).

Child restraint systems are generally designed to be secured to the vehicle seat with the lap belt portion of the lap/shoulder seat belt, or with the LATCH system on the rear seats of the vehicle.

Child Restraint System (CRS)

Infants and small children must be restrained in an appropriate rear-facing or forward-facing CRS that has first been properly secured to the rear seat of the vehicle. Read and follow the installation and use instructions provided by the child restraint manufacturer.

WARNING

An improperly secured child restraint can increase the risk of SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH in an accident. Always observe the following precautions when using a child restraint system:

  • NEVER install a rear-facing child restraint in the front passenger seat.
  • Always securely attach the child restraint to the rear seat of the vehicle.
  • Always follow the child restraint system manufacturer's instructions for installation and use.
  • Always properly secure the child in the child restraint.
  • If the vehicle headrest prevents proper installation of the child restraint (as described in the child restraint system manual), the headrest of the corresponding seat must be adjusted or removed completely.
  • Do not use a car bed or child seat that hooks over the seatback; it may not provide proper protection in an accident.
  • After an accident, have an authorized HYUNDAI dealer inspect the child restraint system, seat belts, anchorages, and lower anchors.
