Seat Belt Pretensioner (Driver and Front Passenger)

~2min read

Your vehicle is equipped with driver and front passenger seat belt pretensioners (retractor pretensioners). The purpose of the pretensioners is to make sure the seat belts fit snugly against the occupant's body in certain frontal or side collisions.

When the vehicle stops suddenly, or if the occupant tries to lean forward too quickly, the seat belt retractor locks the belt in position. In certain frontal or side collisions, the pretensioner activates and tightens the seat belt against the occupant's body.

If the system detects excessive load on the driver's or passenger's seat belt when the pretensioner activates, the load limiter inside the retractor releases part of the pressure on the belt.

WARNING

  • Always wear your seat belt and sit properly in your seat.
  • Do not use a seat belt that is loose or twisted. A loose or twisted seat belt will not properly protect you in an accident.
  • Do not place anything near the buckle. This may damage the buckle and cause it to malfunction.
  • Always replace pretensioners after activation or an accident.
  • NEVER inspect, service, repair, or replace the pretensioners yourself. This must be done by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
  • Do not strike the seat belt assemblies.

WARNING

Do not touch the seat belt pretensioner assemblies for several minutes after activation. When the seat belt pretensioner activates in a collision, the pretensioners become hot and may cause burns.

The seat belt pretensioner system consists mainly of the following components. Their locations are shown in the illustration above:

1. SRS Airbag Warning Light

2. Retractor Pretensioner (Front)

3. SRS Control Module

NOTICE

The sensor that activates the SRS airbag is connected to the seat belt pretensioner. The SRS airbag warning light on the instrument panel will illuminate for approximately 6 seconds after the ignition switch is turned ON, and then it should turn off.

If the pretensioner is not working properly, the warning light will illuminate even though the SRS airbag is not malfunctioning. If the warning light does not come on, stays on, or comes on while the vehicle is being driven, have the seat belt pretensioner and SRS airbag system inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

NOTICE

  • Both the driver's and front passenger's seat belt pretensioners may be activated in certain frontal or side collisions or rollovers.
  • When the seat belt pretensioners activate, a loud noise may be heard and fine dust, which may appear to be smoke, may be visible in the passenger compartment. These are normal operating conditions and are not dangerous.
  • Although the dust is non-toxic, it may cause skin irritation and should not be inhaled for long periods. Thoroughly wash all exposed skin after an accident in which the seat belt pretensioners were activated.

WARNING

  • Fasten the seat belt while sitting upright to maximize the effectiveness of the seat belt pretensioner system.
  • The seat belt pretensioner system is designed to activate only once. Replace the seat belt pretensioner system if it has been activated in an accident.
