Emission Control System

Description and Operation

~1min read

Description

The emission control system consists of three main systems.
  • The Crankcase Emission Control System prevents crankcase gases from escaping into the atmosphere. This system burns the gas after routing it to the intake manifold (closed crankcase ventilation).
  • The Evaporative Emission Control System prevents fuel vapor from escaping into the atmosphere. This system burns the vapor under appropriate engine operating conditions after collecting it in the canister.
  • The Exhaust Emission Control System converts three pollutants - hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) - into harmless substances using a 3-way catalytic converter.
