Your Vehicle's Safety System

Children Always in the Rear

~3min read

WARNING

Always properly secure children in the rear seats of the vehicle.

Children of all ages are safer when restrained in the rear seat. A child riding in the front passenger seat can be forcibly struck by a deploying airbag, resulting in SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH.

Children up to 13 years old must always ride in the rear seats and must always be properly restrained to minimize the risk of injury in a crash, sudden stop, or sudden maneuver. According to accident statistics, children are safer when properly secured in the rear seats than in the front seat, even with airbags. Children can be seriously injured or killed. Children who are too large for a child restraint must use the seat belts provided.

All 50 states have child restraint laws that require children to ride in approved child restraints. Laws regulating age or height/weight limits on which seat belts may be used instead of child restraints vary from state to state, so you should know the specific requirements in your state and where you are traveling.

Child restraint systems must be properly placed and installed in the rear seat. You must use a commercially available child restraint system that complies with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS 213).

Child restraint systems are generally designed to be secured in the vehicle seat with the lap belt portion of the lap/shoulder belt or the LATCH system on the rear seats.

Child Restraint System (CRS)

Infants and small children must be restrained in an appropriate rear-facing or forward-facing CRS that has first been properly secured to the rear seat. Read and follow the installation and use instructions provided by the child restraint manufacturer.

WARNING

An improperly secured child restraint may increase the risk of SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH in a crash. Always observe the following precautions when using a child restraint system:

  • NEVER install a rear-facing child restraint in the front passenger seat.
  • Always securely fasten the child restraint to the rear seat of the vehicle.
  • Always follow the child restraint manufacturer's installation and use instructions.
  • Always properly restrain the child in the child restraint.
  • If the vehicle's head restraint prevents proper installation of the child restraint (as described in the Child Restraint System manual), the head restraint of the corresponding seat position must be adjusted or removed completely.
  • Do not use a car bed or child seat that hooks over the seatback. It may not provide adequate protection in a crash.
  • After a crash, have a HYUNDAI Dealer inspect the child restraint system, seat belts, lower anchors and tether anchors.

WARNING

  • Be especially careful when installing a child restraint in the center seat of the second row rather than the outboard positions. A wide child restraint installed in the center seat may block the seat belt buckles for other seating positions. Do not allow anyone to sit in a seating position where the seat belt buckle is blocked by a child restraint.
  • A child restraint in the center seating position may also contact or press against the seat belt buckles, which may damage the buckles and make them unusable or unsafe. Always check that the child restraint does not touch any seat belt buckle. Check the position of the child restraint regularly to make sure it has not shifted and come into contact with any of the seat belt buckles.
