Installing the Child Restraint System (CRS)

~1min read

WARNING

Before installing your child restraint system, always:

  • Read and follow the instructions provided by the child restraint manufacturer.
  • Read and follow the instructions regarding child restraint systems in this manual.

Failure to observe all warnings and instructions may increase the risk of SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH in the event of a crash.

WARNING

If the vehicle's head restraint prevents proper installation of the child restraint (as described in the child seat system manual), the head restraint of the corresponding seat position must be adjusted or removed completely.

After selecting a suitable child restraint for your child, make sure it fits properly in your vehicle. Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer when installing the child seat. Observe these general steps when installing the seat in the vehicle:

  • Properly secure the child restraint to the vehicle. All child restraints must be secured to the vehicle with the lap/shoulder seat belt routed through the proper guides, or with the LATCH system. If using the lap/shoulder belt for your child restraint, pull the seat belt webbing out completely so the retractor locks, engaging the "automatic locking mode." (See page 2-54.)
  • Make sure the child restraint is firmly secured. After installing the child restraint in the vehicle, push and pull the seat forward and backward and side to side to make sure it is securely attached to the seat. The child restraint with the seat belt must be installed as tightly as possible. However, some side-to-side movement may be expected.
  • Secure the child in the child restraint. Make sure the child is properly secured in the child restraint according to the manufacturer's instructions.

CAUTION

A child restraint in a closed vehicle may become very hot. To avoid burns, check the seat surface and buckles before placing your child in the child restraint.
