If towing is required, we recommend that you have it performed by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer or a commercial towing service.

If a towing service is not available in an emergency, your vehicle may be temporarily towed using a tow strap or chain attached to the emergency tow hook at the front (or rear) of the vehicle.

Use extreme caution when towing the vehicle with a strap or chain. The driver must remain in the vehicle to steer it and apply the brakes.

Towing in this manner should only be performed on paved roads for a short distance and at low speeds. Also, the wheels, axles, powertrain, steering, and brakes must be in good condition.

CAUTION

The driver must remain in the vehicle to operate the steering and brakes while the vehicle is being towed. No passengers other than the driver should be in the vehicle.

Always observe these emergency towing precautions:

  • Depress the brake pedal, shift to N (Neutral), and turn the vehicle off. The ignition switch will be in the ACC position.
  • Release the parking brake.
  • Press the brake pedal harder than usual, as braking efficiency will be reduced.
  • More steering effort will be required because the power steering system will be disabled.
  • Use a vehicle heavier than your own to tow your vehicle.
  • The drivers of both vehicles should communicate with each other frequently.
  • Before emergency towing, check that the hook is not broken or damaged.
  • Securely attach the tow strap or chain to the hook.
  • Do not jerk the hook. Apply steady, even force.

  • Use a tow strap or chain no longer than 16 ft (5 m). Attach a white or red cloth (approximately 12 in (30 cm) wide) to the middle of the cable or chain for better visibility.
  • Move carefully so the tow strap or chain remains taut during towing.
  • Before towing, check the transaxle for fluid leaks under the vehicle. If the transaxle is leaking, a wheel dolly or towing dolly must be used.

NOTICE

Accelerate or decelerate the vehicle slowly and gradually while keeping tension on the tow rope or chain to start or move the vehicle, otherwise the towing hooks and vehicle may be damaged.

NOTICE

To avoid damage to your vehicle and vehicle components when towing:

  • Always pull straight ahead when using the towing hooks. Do not pull at a side or vertical angle.
  • Do not use the towing hooks to pull the vehicle out of mud, sand, or other conditions from which the vehicle cannot be driven out under its own power.
  • Limit vehicle speed to 10 mph (15 km/h) and towing distance to less than 1 mile (1.5 km) to avoid serious transaxle damage.
