Installing the Child Restraint System (CRS)

~1min read

WARNING

Before installing a child restraint system, always:

Read and follow the instructions provided by the child restraint system manufacturer.

Failure to observe all warnings and instructions may increase the risk of SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH in the event of an accident.

WARNING

If the vehicle head restraint prevents correct installation of the child restraint system, the head restraint must be adjusted or completely removed from the seating position.

After selecting a child restraint system suitable for your child and checking that the child restraint system fits correctly on the seat, there are three general steps for correct installation:

  • Properly secure the child restraint system to the vehicle. All child restraint systems must be secured to the vehicle with the lap belt or lap portion of the lap/shoulder belt, or with the LATCH system.
  • Make sure the child restraint system is securely installed. After installing the child restraint system in the vehicle, push and pull the seat forward and side to side to make sure it is firmly secured to the seat. The child restraint system with the seat belt must be installed as tightly as possible. However, some side-to-side movement can be expected. When installing the child restraint system, adjust the vehicle seat and seatback (up and down, forward and backward) so that your child is comfortable in the child restraint system.
  • Secure the child in the child restraint system. Make sure the child is properly restrained in the child restraint system in accordance with the child restraint system manufacturer's instructions.

PLEDGE

A child restraint system in a closed vehicle can become very hot. To prevent burns, check the seat surface and buckles before placing the child in the child restraint system.
