Seat Belt Pretensioners (Driver and Front Passenger)

~3min read

Your vehicle is equipped with driver and front passenger seat belt pretensioners (retractor pretensioner and anchor pretensioner system). The purpose of the pretensioners is to ensure that the seat belts fit snugly against the occupant's body in certain frontal or side collisions. The anchor pretensioner system may be activated in certain severe frontal collisions, along with the airbags.

When the vehicle stops suddenly, or if the occupant tries to lean forward too quickly, the seat belt retractor locks the belt in position. In certain frontal or side collisions, the pretensioner activates and tightens the seat belt against the occupant's body.

(1) Retractor Pretensioner

The purpose of the retractor pretensioner is to ensure that the shoulder belts fit snugly against the upper body of the occupant in certain frontal or side collision(s).

(2) Emergency Locking System

The purpose of the anchor pretensioner system is to ensure that the lap belts fit snugly against the lower body of the occupant in certain frontal collision(s).

WARNING

  • Always wear your seat belt and sit properly in your seat.
  • Do not use a seat belt that is loose or twisted. A loose or twisted seat belt will not properly protect you in an accident.
  • Do not place anything near the buckle. This may damage the buckle and cause it to malfunction.
  • Always replace pretensioners after activation or an accident.
  • NEVER inspect, service, repair, or replace the pretensioners yourself. This must be done by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
  • Do not strike the seat belt assemblies.

WARNING

Do not touch the seat belt pretensioner assembly for several minutes after activation. When the seat belt pretensioner is activated in a collision, the retractor may become hot and may cause burns.

PLEDGE

Body repair work on the front of the vehicle may damage the seat belt pretensioner system. Therefore, the system must be serviced by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

The seat belt pretensioner system consists mainly of the following components. Their locations are shown in the illustration above:

(1) SRS Airbag Warning Light
(2) Retractor Pretensioner
(3) SRS Control Module
(4) Anchor Pretensioner

NOTICE

The sensor that activates the SRS control module is connected to the seat belt pretensioners. The SRS airbag warning light on the instrument cluster will illuminate for approximately 3~6 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, and then it should turn off.

If the pretensioner does not operate properly, the warning light will illuminate even though the SRS airbag is not malfunctioning. If the warning light does not illuminate, stays on, or flashes while the vehicle is being driven, have an authorized HYUNDAI dealer inspect the seat belt pretensioners and SRS airbags as soon as possible.

Information

  • The seat belt pretensioners may be activated in certain frontal or side collisions, or in a rollover (if equipped with a rollover sensor).
  • When the seat belt pretensioners are activated, a loud noise may be heard and fine dust, which may appear to be smoke, may be seen in the passenger compartment. This is normal and not dangerous.
  • Although it is non-toxic, the fine dust may cause skin irritation and should not be inhaled for extended periods. Thoroughly wash all exposed skin after an accident in which the seat belt pretensioners have been activated.
