Driving Your Vehicle

Snow or Ice

~3min read

Keep a sufficient distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you.

Apply the brakes gently. Accelerating quickly, rapid acceleration, sudden braking, and sharp turns are potentially very dangerous practices. During deceleration, use engine braking to the fullest extent. Sudden braking on snowy or icy roads may cause the vehicle to skid.

To drive the vehicle through deep snow, it may be necessary to use winter tires or install snow chains on the tires.

Always carry emergency equipment. Some items you may want to carry include snow chains, tow straps or chains, a flashlight, emergency flares, sand, a shovel, jumper cables, a window scraper, gloves, a flashlight, coveralls, a blanket, etc.

winter tires

WARNING

Winter tires must be equivalent in size and type to the standard tires of the vehicle. Otherwise, the safety and handling of your vehicle may be affected.

Use winter tires when the road surface temperature is below 45°F (7°C). See the chart below and install the recommended winter tires for your vehicle.

If you install winter tires on your vehicle, be sure to use the same tire inflation pressure as the original tires. Install winter tires on all four wheels to balance the handling of your vehicle in all weather conditions. The traction provided by winter tires on dry road may not be as high as the original equipment tires. Check with the tire dealer for maximum speed recommendations.

Tire Chains

Since the sidewalls of radial tires are thinner than other types of tires, they may be damaged when some types of snow chains are installed on them. Therefore, it is recommended to use winter tires instead of snow chains. If snow chains must be used, only use HYUNDAI genuine parts and install the snow chains after checking the instructions supplied with the chains. Damage to your vehicle caused by improper use of snow chains is not covered by your vehicle manufacturer's warranty.

When installing snow chains, attach them to the drive wheels as follows.

2WD: Front wheels

AWD: All four wheels. If a full set of chains is not available for an AWD vehicle, the chains may be installed on the front wheels only.

WARNING

The use of tire chains may adversely affect vehicle handling:

  • Drive at a speed less than 20 mph (30 km/h) or the tire chain manufacturer's recommended speed limit, whichever is lower.
  • Drive carefully and avoid bumps, holes, sharp turns, and other road hazards that may cause the vehicle to bounce.
  • Avoid sudden turns or locked-wheel braking.

Information

  • Install snow chains in pairs and on the front tires only. Note that snow chains on tires provide greater driving force but will not prevent lateral skidding.
  • Do not install studded tires without first checking local and municipal regulations regarding possible restrictions on their use.

Chain Installation

When installing snow chains, follow the chain manufacturer's instructions and tighten them as tightly as possible. Drive slowly (less than 30 km/h) with snow chains installed. If you hear the chains contacting the body or chassis, stop and retighten them. If they still make contact, reduce speed until the noise stops. Remove the snow chains as soon as you start driving on cleared roads.

When installing snow chains, park the vehicle on a level surface away from traffic. Turn on the vehicle hazard warning flasher and place the emergency triangle warning device behind the vehicle (if available). Always place the shift lever in P (Park), apply the parking brake and stop the engine before installing snow chains.

NOTICE

When using tire chains:

  • Chains of incorrect size or improperly installed chains may damage the vehicle's brake lines, suspension, body, and wheels.
  • Use SAE class "S" or wire chains.
  • If you hear noise from chains contacting the body, retighten the chain to prevent contact with the vehicle body.
  • To prevent body damage, retighten the chains after driving 0.3~0.6 mile (0.5~1.0 km).
  • Do not use snow chains on vehicles equipped with aluminum wheels. If unavoidable, use wire-type chains.
  • Use wire chains with a link thickness of less than 0.47 in. (12 mm) to prevent damage to the chain connection.
