  • Check the gauges and indicators on the instrument cluster and the messages on the display when the ignition switch is in the ON position.
  • Make sure all items you are carrying are stowed properly or secured firmly.

WARNING

To reduce the risk of SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH, observe the following precautions:

  • ALWAYS wear your seat belt. All passengers must be properly restrained whenever the vehicle is moving. For more information, refer to "Seat Belts" in chapter 2.
  • Always drive defensively. Assume that other drivers or pedestrians may be inattentive or make mistakes.
  • Concentrate on the task of driving. Driver distraction may lead to an accident.
  • Leave enough space between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead.

WARNING

NEVER drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Drinking or using drugs and driving is dangerous and may result in an accident and SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH.

Drunk driving is the number one cause of traffic deaths each year. Even a small amount of alcohol will affect your reflexes, perception, and judgment. Just one drink can reduce your ability to respond to changing conditions and emergencies, and your reaction time worsens with each additional drink.

Driving under the influence of drugs is as dangerous as, or more dangerous than, driving under the influence of alcohol.

You are much more likely to be seriously injured in an accident if you drink or use drugs and drive. If you drink or use drugs, do not drive. Do not ride with a driver who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Choose a designated driver or call a taxi.
