Enhanced Accident Response System

~2min read

In a collision, if the communication network remains intact and power remains available, depending on the nature of the event, the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) will determine whether to activate the Advanced Crash Response System. It performs the following functions:

  • Shut off the fuel supply to the engine (if equipped).
  • Disconnects power from the electric motor battery (if equipped).
  • Hazard warning lights flash while battery power is available.
  • Turns on the interior lights, which remain on while battery power is available or for 15 minutes after activation of the Advanced Crash Response System.
  • Unlock the power door locks.

Your vehicle may also be designed to perform any of these other functions in response to the Advanced Crash Response System:

  • Turns off the fuel filter heater, turns off the HVAC blower motor, closes the HVAC recirculation door
  • Shut off battery power to the following:
    • Engine
    • Electric motor (if equipped)
    • Electric power steering
    • Brake booster
    • Electric parking brake
    • Automatic transmission shift selector
    • Horn
    • Front wiper
    • Headlamp washer pump

NOTE:

After a collision, be sure to turn the ignition to the OFF or LOCK position and remove the key from the ignition switch to prevent battery discharge. Carefully inspect the engine compartment and the ground around the engine compartment and fuel tank for fuel leaks before resetting the system and starting the engine. If there are no fuel leaks or damage to the vehicle's electrical equipment (e.g., headlights) after the collision, reset the system by following the procedure described below. If you have any doubts, contact an authorized dealer.

Enhanced Accident Response System Reset Procedure

If applicable, see the Hybrid Supplement for more information.

To reset the Advanced Accident Response System after an event, the ignition switch must be changed from START or ON/RUN to OFF before the system can be reset. Carefully check the vehicle for fuel leaks in the engine compartment and on the ground near the engine compartment and fuel tank before resetting the system and starting the engine. After an accident, if the vehicle does not start after performing the reset procedure, the vehicle must be towed to an authorized dealer to be inspected and to have the Advanced Accident Response System reset.
