Description

The immobilizer system disables the vehicle if the ignition is not turned on with the correct key. In addition to the anti-theft systems currently in use, such as the vehicle alarm, the immobilizer system is intended to sharply reduce the risk of vehicle theft.

1. SMARTRA Type Encrypted Immobilizer

   A.	The SMARTRA system consists of a passive challenge-response (mutual authentication) transponder located in the ignition key, an antenna coil, the SMARTRA encoded unit, an indicator light, and the ECU (control unit).

   B.	SMARTRA communicates with the PCM (ECM) (Powertrain Control Module) via a dedicated communication line. Since the engine control system of the vehicle is capable of controlling engine immobilization, it is the most suitable unit to control SMARTRA.

   C.	When the key is inserted into the ignition switch and turned to the ON position, the antenna coil supplies power to the transponder in the ignition key. The transponder then sends an encoded signal back to the PCM (ECM) through the SMARTRA unit.

   D.	If the correct key was used, the PCM (ECM) supplies power to the fuel supply system. The immobilizer indicator in the cluster will remain on for more than five seconds, indicating that the SMARTRA unit has recognized the code sent by the transponder.

   E.	If an incorrect key is used, or if the code is not received or recognized by the PCM (ECM), the indicator will continue to flash for approximately five seconds until the ignition key is turned off.

   F.	If it is necessary to reprogram the PCM (ECM) to register a new key, the dealer requires the customer's vehicle, all of its keys, and a Hi-scan (pro) equipped with the immobilizer software card. Any key that is not registered during reprogramming will no longer start the engine.

   G.	The immobilizer system can store up to eight key codes.

   H.	If the customer has lost a key and cannot start the engine, refer the customer to a Hyundai Motor service center.
