Children Always in the Rear
WARNING - Mounting Location
Never install a child or infant seat on the front passenger seat. A child riding in the front passenger seat may be struck hard by a deploying airbag and seriously injured.
WARNING - Hot Child Restraint
A child restraint system can become very hot if left in a closed vehicle on a sunny day. Always check the seat cover, buckles, and latches before placing a child in the restraint system.
Children under 13 years of age should always ride in the rear seats and should always be properly secured to minimize the risk of injury in a crash, sudden stop, or sharp maneuver. According to accident statistics, children are safer when properly secured in the rear seat than in the front. Even with airbags, children can be seriously injured or killed. Children who are too large for a child restraint should use the seat belts provided.
Most countries have child restraint laws requiring children to travel in approved child restraint systems. Laws governing age or height/weight limits for using seat belts instead of child restraints vary by country, so you should know the specific requirements in your country and in the areas where you travel.
Child restraint systems must be properly positioned and installed in the rear seat. Use a commercially available child restraint system that meets the safety standards of your country.
Child restraint systems are generally designed to be secured to the vehicle seat using the lap portion of the lap/shoulder belt or using the LATCH system in the rear seats of the vehicle.
Child Restraint System (CRS)
Infants and young children must be restrained in a rear-facing or forward-facing CRS that has first been properly secured in the rear seat of the vehicle. Read and follow the installation and use instructions provided by the manufacturer of the child restraint.
WARNING - Child Restraint Installation
An improperly secured child restraint system may increase the risk of serious injury or death in an accident. Always observe the following precautions when using a child restraint system:
- Always follow the child restraint manufacturer's instructions for installation and use.
- Always properly secure the child in the child restraint.
- If the vehicle head restraint interferes with proper installation of the child seat (as described in the child restraint owner's manual), the head restraint of the corresponding seating position must be adjusted or completely removed.
- Do not use a car bed or child safety seat that "hooks" over the seatbacks; it may not provide proper protection in a crash.
