PRE-SAFE® (preventive occupant protection)
The PRE-SAFE® system takes certain preventive measures to protect the occupants in critical situations.
The PRE-SAFE® system is activated
- in emergency braking situations, for example when BAS is activated or, on vehicles equipped with DISTRONIC PLUS, when Adaptive Emergency Assist brakes hard
- on vehicles equipped with DISTRONIC PLUS, when the radar sensor system detects an imminent collision risk in certain situations
- in critical driving dynamics situations, for example when physical limits are exceeded (vehicle understeer or oversteer)
Depending on the critical situation detected, the PRE-SAFE® system takes the following measures:
- Front seat belt pretensioning.
- In an accident situation, adjustment to a better seating position if the front passenger seat does not provide a favorable position.
- If the vehicle skids: the panoramic sliding roof and side windows close, leaving them very slightly open.
When the critical situation has passed without an accident occurring, the PRE-SAFE® system cancels the seat belt pretensioning. You can then cancel the adjustments the PRE-SAFE® system has made.
If the seat belts do not loosen:
- Tilt the backrest slightly or move the seat back slightly, but only when the vehicle is stationary.
The belt pretensioning is reduced and the belt is released.
For more information on seat belt adjustment (comfort function integrated in the PRE-SAFE® system), see the chapter “Seat Belt Adjustment”.
