PRE-SAFE PLUS (Preventive Occupant Protection PLUS). Automatic measures after an accident

~3min read

PRE-SAFE PLUS in the Mercedes E-Class (W212, 4th generation, 2009–2016) extends occupant protection with intelligent assistance in critical situations. The system detects impending collisions and initiates protective measures before an impact occurs. After an accident, automatic functions support safety and assistance. Learn more about this advanced safety solution.

PRE-SAFE PLUS (Preventive Occupant Protection PLUS)

Introduction

PRE-SAFE PLUS is only available in vehicles with the Driver Assistance Package.

PRE-SAFE PLUS can use the radar sensor system to detect an impending frontal or rear collision. In certain hazardous situations, PRE-SAFE PLUS initiates preventive measures to protect the vehicle occupants.

Important Safety Notes

PRE-SAFE PLUS intervention cannot prevent an impending collision.

PRE-SAFE PLUS intervention is not preceded by a warning to the driver.

PRE-SAFE PLUS does not intervene:
  • when reversing
  • when towing a trailer and an impending rear collision is detected

While driving or when Parking Assist is active, PRE-SAFE PLUS does not apply the brakes.

Function

If the radar sensor system detects an impending frontal or rear collision in certain situations, PRE-SAFE PLUS intervenes.

Depending on the detected hazardous situation, PRE-SAFE PLUS initiates the following measures:
  • If the radar sensor system detects an impending frontal collision, the seat belts are pretensioned.
  • If the radar sensor system detects an impending rear collision:
    • The rear hazard warning lamps are switched on with an increased flash frequency.
    • If the driver applies the brakes while the vehicle is stationary, the brake pressure is increased.
    • The seat belts are pretensioned.
The braking intervention by PRE-SAFE PLUS is aborted:
  • when the accelerator pedal is pressed with a gear engaged
  • when the danger of a collision has passed or is not detected
  • when DISTRONIC PLUS requests a start-off

If the hazardous situation has passed without an accident occurring, the original settings are restored.

Automatic measures after an accident

Immediately after an accident, the following measures may be initiated, depending on the type and severity of the impact:
  • Switching on the hazard warning lamps
  • Switching on the emergency lighting
  • Unlocking the vehicle doors
  • Lowering the front side windows
  • Vehicles with memory function: moving the electrically adjustable steering wheel up
  • Switching off the engine and cutting off the fuel supply
  • Vehicles with Mercedes-Benz emergency call system: automatic emergency call
  • Vehicles with hybrid drive: switching off the hybrid system and the high-voltage on-board electrical system

In the Mercedes E-Class W212 (model years 2009–2016), PRE-SAFE PLUS supplements the existing safety concept with measures specifically for an impending rear collision. Hazard warning lamps, seat belt tensioning and increased brake pressure help to protect occupants as effectively as possible and to minimize the consequences of an impact.

In addition, automatic measures are activated after an accident, such as unlocking the doors or switching on the emergency lighting. These well-designed functions make the 4th generation E-Class a pioneer in preventive and reactive accident protection.

Question: What advantages does PRE-SAFE PLUS offer in the W212 E-Class?

Answer: PRE-SAFE PLUS detects impending rear collision situations and initiates measures such as seat belt tensioning and activation of the hazard warning lamps to protect the occupants as effectively as possible.

Question: Which automatic measures are taken after an accident?

Answer: The doors are unlocked, the hazard warning lamps are activated, the engine is switched off and, in vehicles with the emergency call system, help is requested automatically.
