The windshield wipers of the Mercedes E-Class (4th generation, W212, 2009–2016) offer several wiper modes that are easy to select and ensure clear visibility in all weather. The rear window wiper complements this function and ensures clear visibility at the rear as well. Notes on correct use help prevent damage to the glass and the wiper blades.

Switching the windshield wipers on and off

Note

Do not operate the windshield wipers when the windshield is dry, as this can damage the wiper blades. In addition, dust that has collected on the windshield can scratch the windshield when wiping dry.

If it is necessary to switch on the windshield wipers in dry weather, always operate them with washer fluid.

If the windshield wipers leave streaks on the windshield after driving through an automatic car wash, wax or other residues may be the cause. After an automatic car wash, clean the windshield with washer fluid.

In intermittent mode with rain sensor: Optical influences, and dirt on the windshield in dry weather, can cause the windshield wipers to switch on unintentionally. This can damage the wiper blades or the windshield.

Therefore, switch the windshield wipers off in dry weather.

Turn the key in the ignition lock to position 1 or 2.

Turn the combination switch to the corresponding position.

In the positionsorthe appropriate wiping frequency is set depending on precipitation. In positionthe rain sensor is more sensitive than in position, so the windshield wipers wipe more frequently.

If the wiper blades are worn, the windshield is not wiped properly. As a result, you may not be able to observe the traffic situation.
