Overview of climate control systems. General information. Control unit for THERMATIC automatic climate control (2 zones). Information on using THERMATIC automatic climate control
The climate control in the Mercedes E-Class (4th generation, W212, 2009–2016) provides a pleasant interior climate with modern systems such as THERMATIC and effectively filters pollen, dust and pollutants. The system helps prevent windows from fogging up and allows individual settings to increase comfort on every journey. Even after a short standstill, the air stays fresh thanks to the residual heat function.
General Notes
Follow the recommended settings on the following pages. Otherwise the windows may fog up.
To prevent the windows from fogging up, switch on- switch off the air conditioning only briefly
- switch on recirculation mode only briefly
- switch on the “Cooling with air dehumidification” function
- if necessary, switch on the “Defrost windshield” function briefly.
The climate control regulates the temperature and humidity of the vehicle interior and filters unwanted substances from the air.
The climate control is only ready for operation when the engine is running. It works best when the side windows and the roof are closed.
The “Residual heat” function can only be switched on or off with the ignition switched off.
Info
In warm weather, ventilate the vehicle briefly, e.g. using the “Comfort open” function.
This speeds up the cooling process so the desired interior temperature is reached more quickly.
The installed filter removes most dust particles and soot and completely removes pollen. In addition, gaseous pollutants and odors in the air are reduced. A clogged filter reduces the airflow into the vehicle interior. Therefore, observe the filter replacement interval specified in the service booklet. As it depends on environmental factors, such as heavy air pollution, it may be shorter than specified in the service booklet.
The “Residual heat” function may switch on automatically one hour after the ignition key is removed. The vehicle is then ventilated for 30 minutes to dry the automatic climate control.

light up. - Set the temperature to 22 °C
. - Use the “Defrost windshield” function only briefly, until the fogged windshield is clear again.
- Use the “Recirculation mode” function only briefly, e.g. when there are unpleasant outside odors or in a tunnel. Otherwise the windows may fog up, as no fresh air is drawn in in recirculation mode.
- If you want to apply the driver-side temperature settings to the passenger side, use the “ZONE” function. The indicator lamp above the button
goes out. - When you make climate control settings, the climate status display appears at the bottom edge of the audio or COMAND display for about three seconds (see separate operator's manual). It shows the current settings of the various climate control functions.
ECO Start/Stop function
During an automatic engine stop of the ECO start/stop function, only reduced climate control output is available. If you need full climate control output, you can switch off the ECO start/stop function using the ECO button.
