Event data recording
Data storage modules in the vehicle
The vehicle is equipped with a large number of electronic components containing data storage modules that temporarily or permanently store technical data on the vehicle's condition, events and faults.
In general, this technical information documents the condition of parts, modules, systems or the environment:
- Operating conditions of system components (e.g. fill levels)
- Status messages of the vehicle and its individual components (e.g.
wheel revolutions/rotational speed, deceleration, lateral acceleration)
- Malfunctions and faults in important system components
- Vehicle reactions in special driving situations (e.g. airbag deployment, activation of the electronic stability control system)
- Environmental conditions (e.g. temperature)
This data is purely technical and helps to identify and correct faults and to optimise vehicle functions.
Movement profiles showing the routes travelled cannot be created with this data.
If services are used (e.g.
repair work, service procedures, warranty cases, quality assurance), employees of the service network (including the manufacturer) can read this technical information from event and fault data storage modules using special diagnostic equipment. Further information can be provided at these workshops if necessary. Once a fault has been rectified, the data is erased from the data storage module or is continuously overwritten.
During normal vehicle operation, situations may arise in which this technical data, in combination with other information (accident report, vehicle damage, witness statements, etc.), can be linked to a specific person, possibly with the help of an expert.
Additional functions, with the customer's consent (e.g. vehicle rental in an emergency), allow specific vehicle data to be transmitted.
