Maintenance

~4min read

The BMW maintenance system in the 5 Series G30 is based on Condition Based Service (CBS). Sensors record the maintenance requirements depending on use and show due maintenance tasks in the display. The vehicle remote control also stores this data, which simplifies communication with the workshop. The electronic service history transparently documents all work performed. Further topics include OBD diagnostics and legal emission requirements, which are checked via the diagnostic interface. The chapter concludes with recycling information for the end of the vehicle's service life. Maintenance thus becomes efficient, traceable and data-driven, a modern form of vehicle upkeep.

Vehicle equipment

This chapter describes all standard, country-specific and optional equipment offered in the model series. It therefore also describes equipment that is not available in a given vehicle, for example due to the selected optional equipment or country variant. This also applies to safety-related functions and systems. When using the corresponding functions and systems, observe the applicable laws and regulations.

BMW Maintenance System

The maintenance system indicates necessary maintenance work and thus helps maintain the vehicle's road and operating safety.

Scope and intervals may vary depending on the country variant. Replacement work, spare parts, operating fluids and wear items are charged separately. Further information is available from a manufacturer's Service Partner or another qualified Service Partner or a specialist workshop.

Condition Based Service (CBS)

Principle

Sensors and special algorithms take the operating conditions of the vehicle into account.

CBS thus determines the maintenance requirements.

The system therefore allows the scope of maintenance to be adapted to the individual usage profile.

General

Information on service requirements 131, can be shown on the Control Display.

Service data in the remote control: Information on maintenance requirements is continuously stored in the remote control.

The Service Partner can read out this data and propose a maintenance scope for the vehicle.

For this reason, hand the remote control with which the vehicle was last driven to the service advisor.

Standstill Periods

Standstill periods with the vehicle battery disconnected are not taken into account.

Have time-dependent maintenance items such as brake fluid and, if necessary, engine oil and microfilter/activated-charcoal filter updated by a manufacturer's Service Partner or another qualified Service Partner or a specialist workshop.

Service history

Maintenance and repair

Have maintenance and repairs carried out by a manufacturer's Service Partner or another qualified Service Partner or a specialist workshop.

Entries

The maintenance work performed is recorded in the maintenance records and in the vehicle data. The entries serve, like a service booklet, as proof of regular maintenance.

When an entry is made in the electronic service history of the vehicle, service-relevant data is stored not only in the vehicle but also on central IT systems of BMW AG, Munich.

After a change of vehicle owner, the data entered in the electronic service history can also be viewed by the new vehicle owner. A service partner of the manufacturer, another qualified service partner or a specialist workshop can view the data entered in the electronic service history.

Objection

The vehicle owner can object to the entry in the electronic service history at their service partner, including the associated storage of data in the vehicle and the transmission of data to the vehicle manufacturer, for the period during which they are the vehicle owner.

No entry is then made in the electronic service history of the vehicle.

Displays

Show recorded service visits on the Control Display.

On-board diagnostics (OBD) socket

Safety information

NOTE Improper use of the on-board diagnostics socket can lead to malfunctions of the vehicle. There is a risk of property damage. Have service and maintenance work via the on-board diagnostics socket performed only by a service partner of the manufacturer, another qualified service partner, a specialist workshop or other authorized persons. Only connect devices whose use at the on-board diagnostics socket has been checked and is harmless.

Position

Position

On the driver's side there is an OBD socket for checking components that are relevant to emission composition.

Emissions

  • The warning lamp flashes: engine malfunction that can lead to damage to the catalytic converter.
Have the vehicle checked immediately.
  • The warning lamp lights up: deterioration of emissions. Have the vehicle checked as soon as possible.
  • Recycling

The vehicle manufacturer recommends taking the vehicle to a take-back point designated by the manufacturer at the end of its life cycle. The respective national legal regulations apply to take-back.

Further information is available from a manufacturer service partner, another qualified service partner, or a specialist workshop.
