Your own safety
Intended use
Observe the following when using the vehicle:
- Owner's manual.
- Information on the vehicle. Do not remove labels.
- Technical data of the vehicle.
- The laws and safety standards applicable in the country in which the vehicle is operated.
- Vehicle documents and legal documents.
Warranty
Your vehicle is technically designed for the operating conditions and approval requirements that apply in the country of first delivery – homologation. If your vehicle is to be operated in another country, it may first have to be adapted to any differing operating conditions and approval requirements.
If your vehicle does not meet the homologation requirements for a particular country, you cannot claim warranty rights for your vehicle there. For further information, contact a Service Partner.
Maintenance and repair
Advanced technology, e.g. the use of modern materials and high-performance electronics, requires adapted maintenance and repair methods.
The manufacturer of your vehicle therefore recommends having the relevant work carried out by a BMW Service Partner. If you choose another specialist workshop, BMW recommends that you select a workshop that carries out the relevant work, e.g.
maintenance and repair, according to BMW specifications and works with suitably trained personnel, referred to in this owner's manual as another qualified Service Partner or a specialist workshop.
If work is carried out improperly, e.g.
maintenance and repair, there is a risk of consequential damage and associated safety risks.
Parts and accessories
BMW recommends using parts and accessory products that are approved by BMW for this purpose.
The BMW Service Partner is the right contact for genuine BMW parts and accessories, other products approved by BMW, and the associated qualified advice.
These products have been tested by BMW for safety and suitability in the functional context of BMW vehicles.
For genuine BMW parts and accessories, BMW assumes product responsibility. On the other hand, BMW cannot accept liability for non-approved parts or accessory products of any kind.
BMW cannot assess for every individual third-party product whether it can be used in BMW vehicles without safety risk. This assurance is also not given if a country-specific official approval has been granted. Such tests cannot always take into account all operating conditions for BMW vehicles and are therefore sometimes not sufficient.
Data storage
Many electronic components of your vehicle contain data storage devices that temporarily or permanently store technical information on vehicle condition, events and faults. This technical information generally documents the condition of a component, a module, a system or the environment:
- Operating states of system components, e.g. fluid levels.
- Status messages of the vehicle and its individual components, e.g. wheel speed, road speed, deceleration, lateral acceleration.
- Malfunctions and defects in important system components, e.g. lights and brakes.
- Reactions of the vehicle in special driving situations, e.g. deployment of an airbag, activation of stability control systems.
- Environmental conditions, e.g. temperature.
This data is purely technical in nature and serves to detect and rectify faults and to optimize vehicle functions. Movement profiles of journeys made cannot be created from this data. If service work is carried out, e.g. repair work, service processes, warranty cases, quality assurance, this technical information can be read out from the event and fault data memories by employees of a manufacturer's Service Partner or another qualified Service Partner or a specialist workshop, including the manufacturer, using special diagnostic equipment. Further information is available there if required. After a fault has been rectified, the information in the fault memory is deleted or continuously overwritten.
When using the vehicle, situations are conceivable in which this technical data, in combination with other information, e.g. accident reports, damage to the vehicle, witness statements, etc. – possibly with the involvement of an expert – could become personally attributable.
Additional functions contractually agreed with the customer, e.g. emergency vehicle location, allow certain vehicle data to be transmitted from the vehicle.Vehicle Identification Number

The vehicle identification number is located in the engine compartment.
The notes in the owner's manual for the BMW 5 Series (VII generation G30, G31) show how comprehensive and user-friendly the documentation is. It guides the driver through all important topics, from safety-related information to environmental aspects.
The clear symbols and logical structure make it easy to find information quickly in everyday use. Given the extensive equipment of the BMW 5 Series G30/G31, this is a major advantage for operating the vehicle safely and efficiently.
