The air bag control module maintains a reserved energy supply. The reserved energy supply provides deployment power for air bags if air bag control module loses battery power during a collision. Deployment power is available for as much as 2 minute after disconnecting vehicle power. After disabling air bag system, wait for 2 minute before working on system, to prevent deployment of air bags from reserved energy supply. Servicing air bag system during this period may result in accidental deployment and personal injury.
Disarming
Air Bag Fuse Method
- Ensure front wheels are in straight ahead position.
- Place ignition in Off position and remove all fuses supplying power to air bag control module. Air bag control module may have more than one fused power input. Ensure all fuses supplying power to air bag control module are removed to avoid unwanted air bag deployment, personal injury or unneeded air bag system repairs.
- With all air bag control module fuses removed and ignition switch in On position, air bag warning indicator should illuminate. This is normal operation and does not indicate an air bag system fault.
- Wait at least 2 minutes before working on system.
Battery Ground Cable Method
- Ensure front wheels are in straight ahead position.
- Place ignition switch in Off position.
- Note radio and engine oil life resets.
- Disconnect and isolate battery ground cable from battery.
- Wait at least 2 minutes before starting to work on system.

It's important to follow these procedures precisely and refer to the vehicle's owner's manual for model-specific instructions, as the process may vary slightly depending on the Captiva's model year (from 2006 to 2018) and configuration. If you're unsure or uncomfortable performing these steps, it's advisable to seek assistance from a certified technician or authorized dealership to ensure the airbag system's safety and proper functioning.
