Removal

  1. Activate the brake Service Mode.
Refer to: Brake Service Mode Activation and Deactivation (206-00 Brake System - General Information, General Procedures).
  2. Remove the wheel and tire.
Refer to: Wheels and Tires (204-04A Wheels and Tires, Removal and Installation).
  3. Remove the brake caliper spring.
  4. Disconnect the parking brake actuator motor electrical connector.
  5. Remove the brake caliper guide pin caps.
  6. NOTICE: Do not pry on the caliper inspection hole to retract the pistons, as this may damage the pistons and dust boots.

NOTICE: Do not allow the brake caliper assembly to hang from the brake hose, as this may damage the hose.

Remove the guide pins and set the brake caliper aside.
    Torque: 21 lb-ft (28 N·m)
  7. NOTICE: Brake pads with adhesive on the insulator are for single use only. Once the brake pads are separated from the brake caliper, new brake pads must be installed to prevent brake noise and shudder.

Separate the brake pad from the brake caliper. Remove and discard the brake pad.
  8. NOTICE: Brake pads with adhesive on the insulator are for single use only. Once the brake pads are separated from the brake caliper, new brake pads must be installed to prevent brake noise and shudder.

Separate the inboard brake pad from the brake caliper. Remove and discard the inboard brake pad.

Installation

  1. NOTICE: Do not use a C-clamp to compress the brake caliper piston, or the parking brake actuator motor may be damaged.

NOTICE: Do not retract the piston manually, as this may damage the parking brake actuator.

NOTICE: Make sure the brake hose is not twisted when installing the brake caliper or damage to the flexible brake hose may occur.

NOTICE: Use care when inserting the caliper piston into the caliper piston bores, as component damage may occur.

Compress the brake caliper piston until the piston bottoms in the brake caliper bore.
  2. Clean the brake pad contact areas on the anchor plate.
    Material: Motorcraft® Brake Parts Cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B, APM-4-C
  3. NOTICE: Remove all remaining pad adhesive from the brake caliper piston surface, otherwise brake noise may occur.

Remove the brake pad adhesive residue.
    Material: Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B, APM-4-C
  4. NOTICE: Remove all remaining pad adhesive from the brake caliper pin surface, otherwise brake noise may occur.

Remove the brake pad adhesive residue.
    Material: Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B, APM-4-C
  5. NOTICE: Brake pads with adhesive on the insulator are for single use only. Once the brake pads are separated from the brake caliper, new brake pads must be installed to prevent brake noise and shudder.

Remove the protective cover from the pad assembly.
    Material: Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B, APM-4-C
  6. NOTICE: Make sure the brake hose is not twisted when installing the brake caliper or damage to the flexible brake hose may occur.

To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  7. Deactivate the brake Service Mode.
Refer to: Brake Service Mode Activation and Deactivation (206-00 Brake System - General Information, General Procedures).
  8. Depress the brake pedal several times to verify proper brake system operation.
