Refrigerant Identification Equipment

Activation

  1. Follow the instructions supplied with the refrigerant identification equipment to obtain a test sample.
    • 198-RI2012yfp A/C Refrigerant Analyzer for use with R134a and R1234yf vehicles
Use general equipment: refrigerant identification equipment
    • If the R-134a purity level is 98% or higher by weight, the green PASS LED will illuminate. Weight concentrations of R-134a, R-12, R-22, hydrocarbons and air will be displayed on the digital display.
    • If the R-134a refrigerant does not meet the 98% purity level, the red FAIL LED will illuminate and an alarm will sound, warning the user of a potential hazard. Weight concentrations of R-134a, R-12, R-22 and hydrocarbons will be displayed on the digital display.
    • If the hydrocarbon concentration is 2% or more by weight, the red FAIL LED will illuminate, the digital display will show "High Hydrocarbon Content" and an alarm will sound, warning the user of a potential hazard. Weight concentrations of R-134a, R-12, R-22 and hydrocarbons will also be displayed on the digital display.
  2. The percentage of air contained in the sample is displayed if the R-134a content is 98% or more. The refrigerant identifier excludes the effect of air when determining the refrigerant content of the sample, because air is not considered a contaminant, although air may affect air conditioning system performance. When the refrigerant identifier has determined that the refrigerant source is clean (R-134a is 98% or more by weight) and the air concentration is 2% or more by weight, it prompts the user whether purging air is desired.
  3. If contaminated refrigerant is detected, repeat the Refrigerant Identification Test to confirm that the refrigerant is actually contaminated.
  4. NOTICE: If contaminated refrigerant is detected, do NOT recover the refrigerant into R-134a recovery/recycling equipment. Recovering contaminated refrigerant contaminates the recovered refrigerant supply and may damage the recovery/recycling equipment.

Recover the contaminated refrigerant using suitable recovery-only equipment designed to capture and store contaminated refrigerant only.
  5. Determine and correct the cause of the customer's original concern.
  6. Refer to the Air Conditioning (A/C) System Flushing procedure in Group 412.
  7. Dispose of the contaminated refrigerant in accordance with all federal, state and local regulations.
