Engine Control Electronics - Overview. Description and Operation

Overview

The EEC system provides optimal engine control through enhanced powertrain control module (PCM) capability. The EEC system also includes an on-board diagnostic (OBD) monitoring system with features and functions to meet federal exhaust emission standards.

The EEC system has two main divisions: hardware and software. The hardware includes the PCM, sensors, switches, actuators, solenoids and connector terminals. The software in the PCM provides the strategy to control the outputs (engine hardware) based on the values of the inputs to the PCM.

The PCM receives information from various sensors and switches. Based on the strategy and calibration stored in the PCM, the PCM generates the appropriate output. The system is designed to minimize emissions and optimize fuel economy and drivability. The software strategy controls the basic engine operation, provides OBD strategies, controls the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), communicates with the scan tool through the data link connector (DLC), allows reprogramming of the electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM), provides idle air and fuel control, and controls the failure mode effects management (FMEM).
