Diesel Particulate Filter
The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) system filters soot particles from the exhaust gases. The DPF is located under the vehicle in the exhaust system.
Depending on a number of factors monitored by the engine control module, the particulate filter may need to clean accumulated solids. When cleaning is required, the engine control module will begin a self-cleaning function, which starts automatically while driving without notice. The filter is cleaned by periodically burning off soot particles at high temperature. This process occurs automatically under specified driving conditions and may take up to 25 minutes. Fuel consumption may be higher during this period.
While the DPF is being cleaned automatically under the control of the engine control module, the vehicle must be driven continuously for approximately 25 minutes at speeds above 50 km/h for the DPF to clean effectively.
If the vehicle is used for numerous short trips or extended low-speed driving, the engine control module may not be able to fully heat the exhaust system to clean the DPF effectively. The engine control module is designed to constantly monitor the condition of the DPF. When the engine control module determines that the DPF is almost full of particulates, and that the vehicle is not being driven in a way that would allow automatic DPF cleaning to occur effectively, the Driver Information Center (DIC) message will be displayed. Have the filter cleaned as soon as possible.
Cleaning Process
To activate the cleaning process, continue driving safely and maintain vehicle speed above 50 km/h until the warning message in the DIC turns off.
If the vehicle continues to be driven with the DPF warning message displayed and the exhaust filter is not cleaned as required, the malfunction indicator lamp and the message ENGINE POWER IS REDUCED will come on. Dealer service is required.
