Three-Way Catalytic Converter (gasoline engine models)

~1min read

The three-way catalyst contains precious metals that are used as catalysts and do not take part in the chemical reactions themselves. The converters are called three-way because they reduce emissions of all three main harmful components of exhaust gas: hydrocarbons HC, carbon monoxide CO and nitrogen oxides NOx.

When the converter has reached the end of its service life, install a new catalytic converter manufactured by Honda (or a fully equivalent part).

The catalytic converter operates at high temperature for the chemical reactions to proceed efficiently. Therefore, combustible materials located near or in contact with the converter housing may ignite. Do not stop the vehicle on high dry grass, on ground covered with dry fallen leaves, or on flammable debris.

A faulty catalytic converter increases harmful exhaust emissions and may cause deterioration of engine performance.

To ensure proper operation of the catalytic converter, observe the following recommendations.

Fill the fuel tank only with unleaded gasoline. Even a small amount of leaded gasoline can "poison" the catalysts, which may completely disable the catalytic converter.

Always keep the engine in good working condition.

If signs of a malfunction in the ignition or fuel supply systems appear (misfiring, backfiring in the air cleaner, unstable idle, etc.), contact a service station immediately for diagnosis and repair.
