Emission Control System

Description and Operation

Description

The Evaporative Emission Control System prevents fuel vapor from accumulating in the fuel tank by venting it to the atmosphere. When fuel evaporates in the fuel tank, the vapor passes through the vent hoses or pipes in the tank to the activated charcoal canister, and the canister temporarily stores the vapor in the activated charcoal. When the ECM determines that the accumulated vapor should be drawn out of the combustion chambers under certain operating conditions, it uses intake manifold vacuum to purge it.
