Description and Operation

Description

The mode control actuator is located on the heater unit. It controls the position of the mode door by operating the mode control actuator according to the signal from the A/C control unit. Pressing the mode selection switch changes the mode control actuator in the following order: Vent → Bi-Level → Floor → Mix.

Repair Procedures

Inspection

  1. Turn the ignition off.
  2. Disconnect the mode control actuator connector.
  3. Make sure the mode control actuator operates to the defrost position when 12 V is applied to terminal 3 and terminal 4 is grounded. Make sure the mode control actuator operates to the vent position when connected in reverse.

  4. Connect the mode control actuator connector.
  5. Turn the ignition on.
  6. Check the voltage between terminals 5 and 4. Specification
Door Position Voltage (V) Fault Detection
    vent 0.5 ± 0.15 V Low voltage: 0.1 V or less
High voltage: 5.0 V or less
    Defrost 4.5 ± 0.15 V

It will report the current actuator position to the controls.
  7. If the measured voltage does not meet the specification, replace the mode control actuator with a known good actuator and check for proper operation.
  8. Replace the mode control actuator if it is determined to be the cause of the problem.

Replacement

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
  2. Remove the driver airbag module assembly. (Refer to Body - "Driver Airbag Module Assembly")
  3. Disconnect the mode control actuator connector (B), then loosen the mounting screw and remove the mode control actuator (A).
