Driving Your Vehicle

Proper Driving Practices

~2min read
  • Never shift the shift lever from P (Park) or N (Neutral) to any other position with the accelerator pedal depressed.
  • Never move the shift lever to the P (Park) position while the vehicle is moving. Make sure the vehicle has come to a complete stop before attempting to shift to R (Reverse) or D (Drive).
  • Do not shift the shift lever to N (Neutral) while driving. Doing so may result in an accident because of loss of engine braking, and the transmission may be damaged.
  • When driving up or down a slope, always shift to D (Drive) when driving forward or to R (Reverse) when driving backward, and check the displayed gear position on the instrument cluster before driving. If you drive in the opposite direction of the selected gear, the engine may stall and a serious accident may occur. Brake performance may also be reduced due to brake wear.
  • Do not drive with your foot resting on the brake pedal. Even light but constant pressure on the pedal may cause brake overheating, brake wear and possibly even brake failure. Applying the accelerator and brake pedals at the same time may activate engine power reduction logic to slow the vehicle. Vehicle acceleration will resume after the brake pedal is released.
  • When driving in manual shift mode, apply the brakes before downshifting. Otherwise, the lower gear may not engage if the engine speed is outside the allowable range.
  • When driving with the shift paddles, apply the brakes before downshifting. Otherwise, the lower gear may not engage if the engine speed is outside the allowable range.
  • Always apply the parking brake when leaving the vehicle. Do not rely on shifting the transmission into P (Park) to keep the vehicle from moving.
  • Be extremely careful when driving on slippery surfaces. Be especially careful when braking, accelerating, or shifting gears. On slippery surfaces, a sudden change in vehicle speed may cause the drive wheels to lose traction with the road, which may result in loss of vehicle control and an accident.
  • Optimum vehicle performance and fuel economy are achieved by depressing and releasing the accelerator pedal smoothly.

WARNING

To reduce the risk of SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH:

  • ALWAYS wear your seat belt. In a collision, an unbelted passenger is significantly more likely to be seriously injured or killed than a properly belted passenger.
  • Avoid high speeds when driving through curves or turns.
  • Do not make quick steering movements, such as sudden lane changes or rapid, sharp turns.
  • The risk of rollover greatly increases if you lose control of your vehicle at highway speeds.
  • Loss of control often occurs when two or more wheels leave the paved surface and the driver turns to re-enter the road.
  • If your vehicle leaves the paved surface, do not turn sharply. Instead, brake gently before steering back onto the road.
  • HYUNDAI recommends obeying all posted speed limits.
