General Precautions

Before performing any service operation on the SRS, carefully read the following precautions. Follow the instructions described in this manual, otherwise the airbag may accidentally deploy and cause damage or injury.
  • Except when inspecting electrical components, always turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least three minutes before starting work.
  • Use parts with the same standard specifications and quality as original parts. Do not use SRS parts that have been used on another vehicle. Use only new parts when repairing the SRS.
  • Carefully inspect each SRS part before installation. Do not install any parts that have been dropped or improperly handled, and check that they are not cracked or deformed.
  • Before disconnecting any SRSCM components (including disconnecting connectors), always disconnect the SRSCM connector.
Handling and Storage of Airbags. Do not disassemble the airbag. It contains no reusable parts. Once the airbag has deployed, it cannot be repaired or reused. To temporarily store the airbag during service, observe the following precautions.
  • Store the airbag with the pad side facing up.
  • Do not contaminate the airbag module with oil, grease, cleaning agents or water, to avoid damage.
  • Store the airbag on a horizontal surface, away from any heat source (above 85 °C/185°F).
  • Never perform electrical tests on airbags, such as measuring resistance.
  • Do not stand in front of the airbag module during removal, inspection or replacement.
  • See the disposal procedures for scrapping a deployed airbag.
  • With the ignition on, avoid sudden contact with the SRSCM or side or front impact sensors, and wait at least three minutes after turning the ignition off before starting service.
  • When installing or replacing, be careful not to strike (with an impact wrench, hammer, etc.) the area around the SRS module and the side impact sensor or front impact sensors. The airbags may accidentally deploy and cause damage or injury.
  • Replace the front airbag module, SRSCM and FIS when the front airbag has deployed. Replace the SRS wiring when the SRS wiring is damaged. Replace the side airbag module, curtain airbag module, SRSCM and SIS when the side airbag has deployed. Replace the airbag if the SRS wiring is damaged.
  • After a collision in which the front and side airbags did not deploy, check that the side impact sensors and SRS unit are not damaged or deformed. If any damage is found, replace the SRS unit, side impact sensors and/or front impact sensors.
  • Do not disassemble the SRS unit, front impact sensor or side impact sensors.
  • Turn the ignition off, disconnect the negative battery cable, then wait at least three minutes before starting installation or replacement of the SRS unit.
  • Make sure the SRS unit, front impact sensor and side impact sensors are properly secured with their mounting bolts.
  • Do not spill water or oil on the SRS unit or the front or side impact sensors, and take care to protect them from dust.
  • Store the SRS unit, front impact sensor and side impact sensors in a cool (15~25 °C/59~77°F) and dry (30%~80% relative humidity) place.
Wiring Precautions. SRS wiring can be identified by its special yellow outer covering. Follow the instructions in this manual.
  • Never attempt to modify, splice or repair SRS wiring. If the circuit is open or the SRS wiring is damaged, replace it.
  • Route the wiring carefully so it is not pinched, and check that it does not interfere with other components.
  • Make sure all SRS ground points are clean and that the grounds are securely fastened for good metal-to-metal contact. Poor grounding can cause intermittent malfunctions that are difficult to diagnose.
PRECAUTIONS FOR ELECTRICAL INSPECTION
  • When using electrical test equipment, insert the test probe from the wire side of the connector. Do not insert the test probe from the terminal side of the connector, and do not touch the connector.
  • Use a U-shaped probe. Do not apply force when inserting the probe.
  • Use the recommended service connectors to trace a malfunction. Using unsuitable tools may cause a control error due to poor metal-to-metal contact.
Spring Lock Connector. Some SRS connectors have spring-loaded locks. AIRBAG CONNECTOR

DISCONNECTION

To release the lock, pull the spring sleeve (A) and slider (B) while holding the opposite half of the connector. Then separate the connector halves. Be sure to pull on the connector housing and not on the wire.

CONNECTION

Firmly hold the two connector halves together until the protrusion (C) on the connector sleeve side locks with a click.
