Seat Belt Safety Precautions
In this manual: Your Vehicle's Safety System
~2min read
Always fasten your seat belt and make sure all passengers do the same before starting the vehicle. Airbags (if equipped) are designed to supplement seat belts. They are an additional safety device and not a replacement. In most countries, all persons riding in the vehicle are required to wear a seat belt.
WARNING
ALL passengers must be belted while the vehicle is in motion. When adjusting and fastening the seat belt, observe the following safety precautions:
- ALWAYS securely secure children under 13 years old in a rear seat.
- NEVER allow a child to ride in the front passenger seat. If a child 13 years or older must sit in the front passenger seat, make sure they fasten the seat belt correctly and move the seat as far back as possible.
- NEVER allow an infant or child to ride on a passenger's lap.
- NEVER sit in a seat with the seatback reclined while the vehicle is moving.
- Never allow more than one child to use one seat or seat belt.
- Do not route the shoulder portion of the seat belt under your arm or behind your back.
- Never secure fragile items with the seat belt. In a collision or sudden braking, the seat belt may damage them.
- Do not use a seat belt that is twisted. A twisted belt will not protect you effectively in a collision.
- Do not use a seat belt if the webbing or hardware is damaged.
- Do not insert the seat belt tongue into a buckle from a different seat.
- NEVER unfasten the seat belt while driving. You may lose control of the vehicle and cause an accident.
- Make sure nothing interferes with the seat belt mechanism. This may prevent you from fastening the seat belt properly.
- Under no circumstances should the user make any modifications or additions to the seat belt retractors or systems, as this may prevent them from extending properly.
WARNING
Damaged seat belts will not function properly. Always replace:
- Worn or damaged belts.
- Damaged hardware.
- The entire seat belt assembly if it was used during a collision, even if no damage is visible on the belt or anchorage.
